For centuries there have been songs about murders, based on fact or fiction, where the horrible fascination of murder lies in finality. By singing about it, one's fear can recede a little. I sing, therefore I'm alive. Laitinen and Pohjonen mull over these eternal thoughts in Murder Ballads. Enter the mind of the murderer, or weep at the fate of the victim with both vocal and instrumental interpretation of the tales. Laitinen is a retired Professor of Folk Music. He first performed murder ballads in public 40 years ago. The accordionist, Pohjonen, is one of Finland's best-known musicians. He is noted for imaginative performances and new ways of using the accordion, combining multi-channel and electronic sound effects with innovative staging.
